Bird shedding and moulting: normal cycle or nutritional problem

During moulting, feathers fall off in patches, but there are no bald spots.

Birds moult once or twice a year, mostly in spring and autumn. Normal moulting is even, and new quills can be seen emerging from the skin. If round bald spots appear, feathers are broken or do not recover for a long time, nutritional deficiencies, parasites or self-plucking of feathers need to be suspected.

Nutritionally, protein, amino acids (especially methionine and lysine), vitamin A and calcium are key. Cuttlefish bones, eggshell powder, and multivitamins are common supplements, but the dosage needs to be controlled.

Environmental factors are also important: disordered light duration, inappropriate temperature and humidity, and lack of sleep will all affect the moulting rhythm. Ensure a quiet and dark sleep environment for ten to twelve hours a day.

Self-plucking often stems from boredom, anxiety, or itchy skin. Get a veterinary exam first to rule out infections and parasites before considering environmental enrichment.
