The critical period for large dogs is before they are one year old.
The first turning point is puppyhood. In large dogs, the bones have not yet closed before twelve months of age, and excessive exercise and jumping can affect hip joint development. It is recommended to control going up and down stairs, avoid running for long periods of time, and focus on free activities.
The second turning point is weight management in adulthood. For every 10% excess weight, the burden on joints increases by approximately 30%. Maintaining a body condition score of four to five is the most economical way to prevent arthritis.
The third turning point is old age. After the age of seven, if you have difficulty getting up, hesitation going up or down stairs, or reluctance to jump on the sofa, you should evaluate the joint condition as soon as possible. Early intervention methods include weight control, joint nutritional supplements, hydrotherapy and physical therapy.
Daily preventive measures: anti-slip mats, raised food bowls, gentle slopes instead of steps, and controlling slippery floors. Slipping in the home is the reason why many older dogs’ symptoms worsen.
