It is the same species as the British Shorthair and European Shorthair. It is recorded that the Mayflower carried several cats on board to help rid the ship of rats. Cats of this breed are selected from cats collected on the streets and crossed with imported breeds such as British shorthair, Burmese and Persian cats. American shorthair cats are rare in Europe, but they are popular in Japan and are also popular in the United States. American shorthair cats are characterized by beautiful appearance, liveliness, gentle personality, easy to get along with humans, and are very suitable for family breeding.
