Guinea pigs need vitamin C supplements: an easily overlooked fact

Guinea pigs cannot synthesize vitamin C on their own.
Like humans, guinea pigs lack the key enzyme to synthesize vitamin C and must get it from their food.成年豚鼠每日需要约十到三十毫克,孕期需要更多。
Early manifestations of vitamin C deficiency include loss of appetite, rough hair, joint swelling, slow wound healing, and in severe cases, symptoms of scurvy. This type of situation is not uncommon in guinea pigs fed only dry food and a small amount of vegetables.
Supplement options include: fresh bell peppers (high in vitamin C and low in sugar), specialized vitamin C tablets or drops. Note that vitamin C is easily decomposed when exposed to light and heat, and the method of adding it to drinking water should be changed every day.
In terms of dietary structure, hay is still the staple food, combined with special guinea pig food and vitamin C source vegetables. Do not substitute rabbit chow, which does not contain adequate amounts of vitamin C.
