How to arrange a hamster’s cage: running wheels, bedding and hole-making requirements

Running wheels with insufficient diameter can damage the spine.
Syrian hamsters (silky bears) require a solid running wheel with a diameter of at least twenty centimeters, and dwarf hamsters no less than fifteen centimeters. Running wheels with crossbars can easily cause foot injuries and fractures. You should choose solid flat running wheels.
It is recommended that the depth of the bedding should be at least fifteen centimeters so that the hamster can dig its own holes. Paper cotton, sawdust, and paper litter are common choices. Avoid using pine and cedar wood chips that contain aromatic oils.
In terms of cage area, it is recommended that the floor area of a single Syrian hamster should not be less than 0.5 square meters. In multi-layer cages, pay attention to the gap between the layers. Hamsters have poor eyesight and are easily injured if they fall from high places.
Hamsters are solitary animals and must be kept in individual cages except for breeding. Fighting and injuries often occur in shared cages. Such conflicts often occur at night and are not discovered until the next day.
