Keeping dogs warm in winter: Which dog breeds really need to wear clothes

Most double-coated dog breeds do not need it, but short-haired small dogs do.

Dog breeds with double coats (Huskies, Alaskans, Samoyeds, and Golden Retrievers) have strong thermal insulation capabilities. Wearing clothes will compress the hair, affect body temperature regulation, and easily become knotted. The judgment criteria are based on three points: the outdoor temperature is below zero, the wind is strong, and the dog's body condition score is low. You can wear clothes if you meet two or more items.

Clothes should fit well and avoid covering the excretory area; the material should be fleece or wool blend, and breathability should be preferred over heavy weight. Take them off immediately after returning home. Wearing them for a long time will cause skin friction and static electricity.

Also pay attention to snow melting agents in winter. Road salt will burn the paw pads. After returning home, rinse with warm water and dry them, and apply paw wax if necessary.
